Retired Firefighters of 2011
On December 10th, 2011 the first three Lifetime Members were inducted into the Burns Harbor Fire Department Retirees. These men dedicated and sacrificed a lot of time to the Town of Burns Harbor. To what to many would be wasted time as a volunteer, these men took pride in the service they provided for our Town.
Ray Poparad
Ray served the Fire Department for 27 years with 8 of those years as the Fire Chief. The famous joke about Ray was and will always be Rays saying of “Do you know who I am” Ray we do know who you are and we thank you for your dedication to the Fire Department and Fire Service. Ray managed to lay a nice solid foundation that has helped the fire department move and progress to what it is today. With every good leader comes years of success to follow. With all that you have done to provide for us we welcome you to the very first group of Lifetime Members of the Burns Harbor Fire Department.
Wally Macchiarella
Wally served the Fire Department for 19 years with many of the years as an officer. Wally always took pride in the Fire Department and Training. Wally loved being an engineer, whether that entailed pumping or just driving to an emergency scene. Wally was a little rough around the edges if you didn’t know him, but once you know him and he drops his guard, he is a person that will do anything for anyone at anytime. Wally is continuing to help train and mentor upcoming firefighters into the fire service with his evaluating and proctoring for the District 1 training. Wally may have retired from being an active part of the Burns Harbor Fire Department but he has not retired from be a firefighter at heart. Thank you for your commitment to us all and the community and we welcome you to the very first group of Lifetime Members of the Burns Harbor Fire Department.
Phil Mulroe
Phil has served with Fire Department for 11 years. Phil has shown his knowledge during many trainings and meetings. Phil is one the toughest guys you will ever meet. As many of you know Phil had to step back to deal with his health for a short time but, with Phil being the strong willed person he is, it didn’t slow him down. Phil remained a firefighter and continued to serve our community through his battle. We can all learn from Phil and his experiences. Phil was always the “voice of reason” during meetings and always had a positive input in our meetings when things were tough. We always knew something was not right when Phil would finally pipe up and tell us what is going wrong. Phil we thank you for being a part of us and showing us what it is to be tough and we welcome you to the very first group of Lifetime Members of the Burns Harbor Fire Department.
