MEMBERS OF OUR DEPARTMENT
Chief Arney has been a member of the fire service since 1988. He has served the Town of Burns Harbor for his entire career as a firefighter. Chief Arney serves as a paid Chief and holds certification’s of: EMT, Firefighter I/II, Instructor II/III, Inspector I, fire Officer I, Strategy & Tactics, Haz-Mat Operations, Driver Operator, C.E.V.O Instructor, Dive Master and remains as an active dive team member.
Deputy Chief Beach has been a member of the fire service since 2000. He has served the Town of Burns Harbor for his entire career as a firefighter. Chief Beach also serves the Town of St. John as a Career Firefighter where he holds the rank of a Lieutenant in the Training Division. He also holds certification's as an EMT-P, Firefighter I/II, Instructor II/III, Inspector I, Fire Officer II, Strategy & Tactics, Haz-Mat Operations, Driver Operator, Dive Master, and Associates Degree in Fire and Paramedic Science and serves as the Department’s dive team leader.
Assistant Chief Hayes
Captain Sowash joined the fire service in 1990. He has served the Burns Harbor Fire Department since 1999. Captain Sowash holds the certification's of: Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer I, Instructor I, Strategy and Tactics, and Hazmat Operations.
Lieutenant Engelhardt has been in the fire service since 2003. Lieutenant Engelhardt has served Burns Harbor since 2005. He is also a full time Firefighter with U.S. Steel in Gary, IN. Lieutenant Engelhardt holds the certification's of: Firefighter I/II, Instructor I, Technical Rescue Awareness, Advanced EMT, & Fire Officer I.
Captain Valpatic has been in the fire service since 1994. Captaint Valpatic has served Burns Harbor since 2005. He is also a full time Firefighter with the town of Chesterton, IN, where he holds the rank of Engineer. He also is a part time firefighter in the Arcelor Mittal Burns Harbor Fire Department. Captain Valpatic holds the certification's of : Firefighter I/II, Driver Operator Pumper and Aerial, Instructor I, Strategy and Tactics, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Ops, Tech Rescue Awareness, EMT-B, Safety Officer, Inspector I & II, and Motor Sports Emergency Response.
Lieutenant Nowacki has been in the fire service since 2001. He has served Burns Harbor since 2007. Lieutenant Nowacki holds the certification's of: Basic EMT, Firefighter I/II, Fire Officer Strategy and Tactics, ERDI, and OSHA Hazmat Tech.
Safety Officer Rogala has been in the fire service since 2007. He has served Burns Harbor since that time. Officer Rogala holds the certification's of: Firefighter I/II
Engineer Zube has been in the fire service since 1990. He has served Burns Harbor since 2005. He is also a full time firefighter with U.S. Steel in Gary, IN where he holds the rank of Engineer and is a part of their Technical Rescue team. Engineer Zube holds the certification's of: Firefighter I/II, Advanced EMT, Rope Rescue,
Engineer Tyskiewicz was our 2010 Firefighter of the Year. He started the fire service in 2005 with the Burns Harbor Fire Department. Engineer Tyskiewicz is also currently a Firefighter/EMT for the town of Chesterton. Engineer Tyskiewicz holds the certification's of: Fierfighter I/II, Instructor I, Strategy and Tactics, EMT-B, and a ERDI Diver.

Firefighter Boyd began the fire service in 2005 with the Burns Harbor Fire Department. Firefighter Boyd holds the certification's of: Firefighter I/II, ERDI Diver, and Strategy and Tactics.
Firefighter McCune started the fire service in 2006. He joined the Burns Harbor Fire Department in 2010. Firefighter McCune is als a firefighter for the town of Ogden Dunes. Firefighter McCune holds the certification's of: Firefighter I/II, Hazmat Operations, EMT-B, Driver/Operator, Instructor I, Technical Rescue Awareness, Open Water Dive, and Investigator I.
